Moon phases come from which half is lit, not from Earth's shadow

Sunlight always falls on half the moon. What changes across the month is how much of that lit half is turned towards us. When the moon sits roughly between Earth and the sun, its dark side faces us and we call it new; when Earth is in the middle, we see the whole lit face. One full round of phases takes about 29.5 days. Earth's shadow does land on the moon occasionally, and that is a lunar eclipse.

A bill becomes law only if both chambers pass the identical text

In the US Congress, most bills die quietly in committee, a small group of members that simply never sends them for a full vote. A bill that clears one chamber then has to pass the other in exactly the same wording, so any differences get negotiated out first. After that the president signs it or vetoes it, and a veto only fails if two thirds of both the House and the Senate vote for the bill again.

Seasons come from Earth's tilt, and we are closest to the sun in January

Earth's axis leans about 23.4 degrees, and it keeps pointing the same way all year. In July the northern half leans sunward, so sunlight arrives steeply and the days run long. In January that half leans away, the same light spreads thinly across the ground, and days shorten. Distance has almost nothing to do with it: Earth is slightly nearer the sun in early January, mid northern winter. That is also why the southern hemisphere's seasons are reversed.

Once the tilt clicks, the reversed southern seasons and the long summer evenings stop being separate mysteries.

A logarithm answers how many times you multiplied, and turns multiplying into adding

The log base 10 of 1000 is 3, because you multiply by ten three times to reach 1000. The useful part is the arithmetic. Log 10 plus log 100 equals log 1000, so adding logarithms multiplies the original numbers. Before calculators, that let astronomers and navigators replace grinding multiplication with lookups in a table and a sum. Slide rules were just that trick carved into wood. Earthquake, sound and pH scales use logs so vast ranges fit on one small scale.

It makes decibels, Richter numbers and pH readable: each step up means multiplying, not adding.
