A million seconds is 12 days. A billion seconds is 32 years.

Count one number per second, never sleeping. You reach a million in under two weeks. You reach a billion around your thirty second birthday. Same words, wildly different objects: a billion is a thousand millions, not a bit more than one. This is why a person with a billion dollars is not a slightly richer millionaire, and why a billion pound overspend is not a rounding error on a million pound budget.

Politicians and headlines use million and billion in the same sentence, counting on you to feel them as neighbours.

02Money

A billion dollars is about three dollars for every American

340 million people, one billion dollars, so $2.94 each. That single division defuses a lot of outrage and a lot of hype. A trillion is a thousand billion, so roughly $3,000 per person. US federal spending runs several trillion a year, on the order of $20,000 for every man, woman and child. So a $2 billion scandal is six dollars from you, while a $1 trillion program is real money. Divide before you react.

Politicians quote budgets in units nobody can feel, and per-person division turns them back into something you can judge.

03World

About 8 billion people are alive, and roughly three in four live in Asia or Africa

China and India each hold around 1.4 billion, so either one alone is close to a sixth of everyone alive. The United States, at about 340 million, is a bit over 4 percent. All of Europe together is under 10 percent. Most people picture humanity as far more Western than it is, which quietly distorts guesses about market sizes, emissions, and how a typical person actually lives.

Almost every claim about "people" is really a claim about a slice, and this tells you how big the slice is.

04Science

Your body runs on about 100 watts, the same as an old lightbulb

Eat 2,000 calories a day, and since a food calorie is really a kilocalorie, that is 8.4 million joules spread over 86,400 seconds. Call it 100 joules per second, which is 100 watts. Now add everything else: the car, the heating, the factories making your things. In a rich country that comes to roughly 10,000 watts per person, about a hundred bodies' worth.

Once food and fuel are both in watts you can compare eating, driving, and heating on one scale.

India and China each have about 1.4 billion people, the US about 340 million

Each of the two giants is roughly four times the United States, and together they hold a bit over a third of everyone alive. UN estimates put India ahead of China from around 2023. After the US come Indonesia near 280 million, Pakistan and Nigeria over 200 million each. Most people badly overrate the American share: it is about 4 percent of humanity. When someone says most people do something, ask whether that survey ever left one country.

Country populations are the denominator under most global claims, and getting them wrong distorts everything downstream.

06Science

The moon is 30 earth-widths away, and the sun is 400 times farther still

The moon sits about 384,000 km out, roughly 239,000 miles. The sun is about 150 million km, 93 million miles, so sunlight takes 8 minutes and 20 seconds to reach you while moonlight takes 1.3 seconds. Classroom diagrams squash all of it. Shrink earth to a basketball and the moon becomes a tennis ball seven metres away, with nothing in between.

It fixes the mental picture of space as crowded, and gives you a ruler for every other distance in astronomy.

07Health

Roughly 60 million people die worldwide each year, about 165,000 a day

That is the baseline any death toll should be measured against. Heart disease is the single largest cause, killing close to 9 million a year, with stroke next. So a hazard that kills 100,000 people globally is real and worth preventing, and also under one fifth of one percent of annual deaths. Inside the United States, total deaths run around 3 million a year, which is where American statistics should be anchored.

Without a denominator, every death toll sounds either catastrophic or trivial depending on how it is written.
